Module 2 of 6Lesson 1 of 2~15 min

A mental model of Git in a team

Learning Git commands without understanding what they move around quickly leads to confusion, then to mistakes. This lesson gives you a clear picture of the path a change follows on its way to production, so you always know where your work stands and what it still has to get through.

Lesson objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to explain where a change is (files, index, local commit, remote repository, main) and tell, from git status and git log, what is missing for it to reach production.

Topics covered

  • understanding Git
  • Git mental model
  • commits and remotes
  • git status
  • Git in a team

What you will learn in this module

This lesson is part of the course Git for PMs: ship as a team without putting production at risk

  • Read an existing repository and its pipeline (README, CONTRIBUTING, CODEOWNERS, CI workflows, environments) to know who reviews what, what gets checked and what goes to production, and when.
